Liquid-based cytology in the evaluation of colorectal polyps. A comparison study with histologic results.
Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the role of liquid-based cytology in the diagnostic approach of colorectal polyps by comparing results from brushing and the “gold standard” endoscopic biopsy.
Material and Methods: One hundred ninety three brush and tissue biopsy specimens obtained from 118 patients were used for cytological and histological evaluation. Liquid-based cytologyhas been applied. Five diagnostic categories were used.
Results: According to our results, liquid-based cytology was found to be an equally sensitive technique in the diagnosis and categorization of colorectal polyps compared with endoscopic biopsy (sensitivity 96.25%), with a high capability of determining the grade of dysplasia for colonic adenomas; in detail, the specificity was 95.57%, the positive predictive value 94% and the negative predictive value 97%.
Conclusions: Cytological diagnosis of brushed colorectal polyps is an additional risk free method that is quit sensitive and easy to be applied, even in outpatients and may therefore be used as a complementary method to histological evaluation.
